Rosa Parks was born 4th of February 1913.  She was Known as the Best known as the “Mother” of the modern-day civil rights movement.

On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to obey bus driver James F. Blake’s order that she give up her seat to make room for a white passenger. Parks’ action was not the first of its kind to impact the civil rights issue. Others had taken similar steps, including Lizzie Jennings in 1854, Homer Plessy in 1892, Irene Morgan in 1946, Sarah Louise Keys in 1955, and Claudette Colvin on the same bus system nine months before Parks, but Parks’ civil disobedience had the effect of sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Parks’ act of defiance became an important symbol of the modern Civil Rights Movement and Parks became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation. She organized and collaborated with civil rights leaders, including boycott leader Martin Luther King, Jr., helping to launch him to national prominence in the civil rights movement.

At the time of her action, Parks was secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and had recently attended the Highlander Folk School, a Tennessee center for workers’ rights and racial equality. Nonetheless, she took her action as a private citizen “tired of giving in”. Although widely honored in later years for her action, she suffered for it, losing her job as a seamstress in a local department store. Eventually, she moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she found similar work. From 1965 to 1988 she served as secretary and receptionist to African-American U.S. Representative John Conyers. After retirement from this position, she wrote an autobiography and lived a largely private life in Detroit. In her final years she suffered from dementia, and became involved in a lawsuit filed on her behalf against American hip-hop duo OutKast.

Isn’t it ironic that as kids and teenagers the first thing we did and still do is run to the back of the bus, to occupy the back seat. Yet this iconic lady went to jail so we could sit at the front. Education is important, education is key and not all education can come from the schools, colleges and university’s. If we as parents do not educate ourselves, how can we help educate our children.

For Creative Minds #1: New places revealed today are:

Was you intrigued by my post title, I hope you were I worked hard on it, lol (laugh out loud). I am going to start a series of posts like this due to the many new places I have found online. Now these places are not from search engine results but from links within other sites. The places I am going to share with you in this post were found via my facebook fanpage news feed.

Let me tell you, when I click on links within other sites it becomes a trail of exciting breadcrumbs, its great finding the unknown. I do this type of link clicking all the time but this time I thought I should share these places with my readers. So if you are an artist, designer or even a crafter you might find something new reading these posts. Then again you may already know the places I find ( that could be because I clicked your links on your site, who knows).

O.k that’s the intro done, let’s get down to business.

This share consists of 3 places, didn’t want to overwhelm you to quickly :)

1st – MondayArtDay.blogspot.com – This is a challenge blog, which happen every Monday. On this day they give a word pr phase and the members illustrate their ideas and then post their work on the site.

2ndIllustrationFriday.com – Yes another challenge blog. As the url suggests this a Friday challenge. Same as above they give a topic and you are free to illustrate however you want to interpret it.

Both these sites are great as inspiration boosters, especially when that creative block sets in. I know you are saying I don’t have time, well sometimes we need to find a little time to try something different. At the end of the day you don’t have to actually take part and submit, you could simply do some sketches of ideas but keep them to yourself.

3rd  – IllustrationMundo.com – I am still exploring this site, the main section I see is that if offers a database of artists / designers work and you can submit your work to that database.  Can’t say more than that because I need time to explore more myself. I can say that there is load to see, read, join and discuss here. I have found some articles that I really want to read. One especially caught my eye and its titled “Does a professional illustrator need a style?” This is actually on another site (it’s the editor personal site) but the links are on this site.

There you have it 3 new places revealed today. Go on check them out and come and tell me what you  think. Find anything that gets you really excited, share it here.

I Have Been Working on Valentines

I have being working on a design or 2 for valentines and love in general.  From my initial sketch I have inked in the outlines and added colour.  I would like to use a variation of this design, unsure on how those will turn out, but will take a look at it when I have completed this design. You see I just don’t like to use a design and then move on, some may say its cheating by having one design & duplicating it for more design, especially for greeting cards. However I can’t help but want to recycle my designs but I do think I will have to find another outlet for my recycled designs.

Saying that I have created 1 more design from this one but there’s a valid reason, honest. The variation of this design was a skin tone changed, I have created a white male with a black female, this time she is wearing a dress. I want to create a design with a white female and a black male to add to the range..I have already uploaded the designs to the site, so they are available now.
